Gerry Kho Architects is 11 years old today!
We’d like to thank all our clients for another year. We’d also like to give massive shout outs and thank you to the contractors, tradies, suppliers and consultants for your time, effort and conversations. Thanks to everyone who supported us over the years!
Just a short FYI – our studio will be taking a short break to coincide with the building industry holiday over the Christmas and New Year period. Officially, our last day will be Friday 15th December 2017 and we’ll be back on Monday 8th January 2018.
As usual, emails can be sent to email@example.com and physical mails/parcels can be delivered to PO Box 1389, Booragoon, WA, 6954.
And if you need to reach me, I’ll make myself available on my mobile +61 403 980 117.
Please note that starting 2018 our studio will be ‘consultation by appointment only‘. If you need to swing by our business premise, shoot us an email to make arrangements.
For now, we’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a joyous and safe festive season! :)
Thought we’d provide a quick update on this project. There were many dramas over the past few months including a high level of theft and vandalism [some idiot set fire in one of the bedrooms upstairs!] which was somewhat surprising for the area. However, the building is shaping up fantastically!
As seen in the [rather bad] photos below, the top level external walls are closing up. Coming to the end of 2017, we’ll hopefully see the bottom level close up before Christmas and work can begin on the interior when activities begin again in 2018.
As usual, keep an eye out on this blog for more updates [even though we’ve been a bit too busy to write in this blog since the end of June…oops!].
Since the 2017 Architecture Awards is currently in progress, it reminded me that I didn’t provide an update on our entry in the Architecture Awards last year! Oops! I can’t believe it has been a full year since! Anyway…in 2016 the New Ronald McDonald House was shortlisted in all 5 categories that the project was entered into/nominated for. Below results:
- Residential Architecture [Multiple Housing] – shortlisted
- Commercial Architecture – shortlisted
- Interior Architecture – shortlisted
- Sustainable Architecture – shortlisted
- The Mondoluce Lighting Award – shortlisted
We didn’t take home a prize but this shouldn’t come as a surprise since we were the underdogs against a lot of very prominent practices armed with an unusually large number of very public and/or government projects e.g. Treasury building, City of Perth Library etc. I did leave with the knowledge and the satisfaction that we gave the ol’ boys and big dogs a run for their money!! woof woof mud@f@k@s!
The New Ronald McDonald House was featured in the Autumn/Winter 2017 issue of The Architect. Yours truly was interviewed for the article.
At last…we can post an update on this project. After quite a challenging start with the original builder being a complete dick, some serious water table issues which caused significant delays, and the mismanagement of the second builder that eventually resulted in his business going broke, the project is finally beginning to shape up and starting to look like a house rather than a bomb site in Syria! *too soon?*
The client had enough and took the construction on as an owner-builder…as the saying goes ‘if you want the job done right etc etc’ :p Thanks also to Mike the chippy. More updates soon…
Just in case anyone was wondering – yes, we’ve been back for a week now! By the way, Happy New Year and Gong Xi Fa Cai to everyone! Hope your festive season was safe and well.
We’ve had a busy past week mainly to do with restructuring and re-evaluating where we stand in the industry after we’ve just celebrated our 10th anniversary in December 2016. This then informed us of how we want to work and what we want to focus on moving forward. During the hiatus, I’ve had time to contemplate where I’d like to take Gerry Kho Architects and the ideal way we’d like to practice architecture [physically + philosophically] as well as how the ‘practice’ will more intensely intertwine with the creative, design, development and construction aspects to what we do.
I’ll continue with my teaching role at Curtin University this year – a role that I enjoyed immensely last year. Teaching is a way that I ‘pay it forward’ and to educate the future generation of architects – to instill in them not just knowledge but values i.e. the meaning of quality, rigour and pride. And yes, I know I sound Howard Roark-ish…
That’s all for now. Keep your eyes on this website for more updates throughout the year!
We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year! May 2017 bring us good health, success, prosperity and happiness!
A reminder that our firm will be on leave from today till Monday 30th January 2017. Any packages can be delivered to PO Box 1389, Booragoon WA 6954. As I’ll be away in the Amazon, I’ll have limited access to the internet and phone reception but if urgent, I’m reachable on my mobile on +61 403 980 117 or email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Stay safe + take care of each other
